  93. It is time once again for the Netter's Dinner @ MacWorld.  This  is the
  94. last of three calls for reservations.  Feel free to invite your friends.

  100. MacWorld is Wednesday, January 5 through Saturday, January 8.  The dinner
  101. will be held Friday the 7th at the Hunan on Sansome at Broadway at 7:00
  102. after the show.  We will meet in the lobby of Moscone Hall at 6:00 (the time
  103. the show ends) and will begin the walk to the restaurant at 6:30.  It can be
  104. cold, so bring your coat.  It's about 15 blocks (if that) and only takes
  105. about 20 minutes to walk.  It's quite a sight seeing a line of net.geeks
  106. wandering across town, but of course geeks are tame in San Francisco.  ;)
  107. Dinner should start around 7:00 and there will be a no-host bar available
  108. before and after dinner.
  109.  
  110. The buffet won by a narrow margin and I was able to get assurances that the
  111. meal would be up to the standards of the sit down meal last year.  It will
  112. be cheaper too, at only $14 a head, and there should be more food available
  113. too.  We'll be charged per our reservation count though, so don't RSVP if you
  114. can't come.  I'll be taking names and numbers of no-shows!
  115.  
  116. Our awards show will frivolous and silly, in true Usenet tradition, but we
  117. need more categories and nominees or I will be forced to do it all myself
  118. and the fun will wear thin quickly.
  119.  
  120. If anyone is bringing a portable printer, I could print labels off my
  121. PowerBook and we could have email address nametags for the affair.  How
  122. totally geeky, eh?
  123.  
  124. For that matter, if you have a PowerBook I recommend bringing it, as I hope
  125. to set a record for the largest all-PowerBook Bolo game.  We'll be running
  126. PhoneNet and LocalTalk wiring (I have a conversion cable so we can link the
  127. two and put people on whichever side they are equipped for), so feel free to
  128. bring whatever connectors you have, as long as they are not terminated end
  129. connectors (since we need to hook people together and only 2 people can be
  130. the ends).  If you have extra connectors then bring them, as there are
  131. always problems and more is better.

  147. This is version 2.5.1 dated November 1993 of the "3-Button Power" control
  148. panel, for use with Mouse Systems' A3 Mouse and A3 Trackball. It's supposed
  149. to work on all Macs (I tested it on my brand new Duo 250/DuoDock and a
  150. Quadra 840AV running Sys7.1), however it brings no new feature w.r.t.
  151. version 2.0. The mouse is fine (optical mouse, very comfortable) but the
  152. software is very poor, much inferior IMHO to Logitech's MouseKey.

  155. user.

  424. The 1/3/94 edition of MacWeek included an index to all
  425. products reviewed in 1993. It noted that a tab-delimited
  426. version is available on ZiffNet/Mac, but since I don't
  427. have access to that service, I scanned the printed review
  428. and saved it as tab-delimited text myself. It looks okay
  429. with a left tab at 3 in. and a right tab at 6.5 in.

  487. Special thanks to Alan Hewat, Bruce Goldstein, Matthew Ahrens, Subbarayudu

  490. The results are summarized below.

  496. Mixed reviews here. Some suggested manual switching (which I wanted to
  497. avoid). There are auto-switching devices, but no on responding had
  498. experience with them.

  504. Suggestion here was to go with PowerKey/PowerKey Remote for turning the CPU

  993. I've been using DeltaGraph Pro 3 for less than a month.
  994. I like the features alot.  Problem is, tho, that even with
  995. gobs of memory allocated to this package, menu options
  996. get greyed out for no apparent reason, the slides cannot
  997. be properly placed in order, and as the presentation document
  998. increases in size, the file eventually becomes corrupt or
  999. the application quits with a Type 1 error whenever I try to
  1000. edit the document.  IMHO, these are not good things for an end
  1001. user to experience.

  1003. So whenever I'm baffled I turn to the experts on Info-Mac,
  1004. where the combined brain power and knowledge bank are of truly
  1005. awesome proportions.  If someone could help enlighten me
  1006. on some of the problems occurring here, I would be grateful.
  1007. I am running Deltagraph on an LC III with System 7.1 with RAM
  1008. to spare.  Just two extensions:  Sound manager and Disinfectant.
  1009. What can the matter be?  Are there some serious problems with
  1010. DG Pro 3, or is it just my own system?  I don't want to give
  1011. DeltaGraph bad press, but I have never seen
  1012. files of any kind mangled so badly as these.

  1092. Well, I now have my little Mac back.  I took it to a different dealer
  1093. who is a licensed Apple tech person and an Applied Engineering dealer
  1094. as well.  It took him less than 3 hours to get the problematic TransWarp
  1095. accelerator board working in a klutzy way; less than a day to figure out
  1096. that the local yokels who had installed it first-time-around and sold me
  1097. a hard drive had misconnected the hard drive.
  1098.  
  1099. I am still a long way from pleased with Applied Engineering, but I can
  1100. now honestly say I have a 16 MB SE running under system 6, which ain't
  1101. bad, and it does fly.  Well, it flew before, but it flew into brick
  1102. walls and crashed.  Now it steers a bit better.

  1104. It still has some glitches which almost led me to post a note about
  1105. More Tales of Woe--at first, I couldn't get Photoshop, GIF Converter,
  1106. SuperPaint, or other programs that do cute things with memory and disk
  1107. space inorder to do their thing, to run.  This did not please me.  But
  1108. later, while running under MultiFinder in order to play in the big big
  1109. memory field, I discovered that those programs run just fine as long as
  1110. one is in MultiFinder instead of the old MonoFinder.  And of course I
  1111. was (finally) planning to actually USE the MultiFinder now that there's
  1112. 16 MB to sprawl out in, and it probably didn't occur to AE that anyone
  1113. would be so accustomed to life within the MonoFinder that they'd start
  1114. off from there.  But old habits borne of a shortness of memory, they do
  1115. die hard.

  1117. OTHER THOUGHTS, MAINLY UNRELATED...
  1118.  
  1119. 1.  About those 3M disks--yeah, pretty horrible, but so are Verbatims
  1120. and even Maxells in the 1.44 MB capacity variety.  Frankly, I have yet
  1121. to find the MFM-style disks of any manufacturer to have the same solid
  1122. dependability of the GCR 800K disks.  I still own the very first disk I
  1123. ever bought, and while I admit I don't use it often, I wrote a whole book
  1124. on it and booted from it until bigger systems and dual-drive SE's made
  1125. that unnecessary and impossible.  Somtimes I wish Apple had come out with
  1126. a high-density GCR-based disk (but on the other hand I like the compati-
  1127. bility of my SuperDrive).
  1128.  
  1129. 2.  My girlfriend's Amiga has that A-MAX II emulator on it; she's been
  1130. running Mac programs in black and white with it for a year or so now.
  1131. It uses the Mac Plus's 128K ROMs and ports to the Amiga's own Motorola
  1132. processor and SIMMS, which in this case means it thinks it's a 33 MHz
  1133. ok030-based Mac Plus.  Well, they sent a note saying they're upgrading the
  1134. emulator so as to provide color.  She'll need system 7.1 with 32 bit
  1135. QuickDraw, she told me, and was asking me about what all that means and
  1136. how it works, and as I pontificated, it occurred to me to wonder just
  1137. how, INDEED, they're getting color out of a machine backed by those
  1138. 128 K chips?  There's no ROM upgrade involved.  Hey, if she can get
  1139. color out of this setup, why can't I get color out of my SE's 256 K
  1140. ROMS (which also don't know from color QuickDraw)?  Anyone got a clue?

  1188. It's possible that something got into the trackball but I keep my desk
  1189. pretty clean -- also, I've taken the trackball out a couple of times
  1190. and cleaned it (which helps for a few minutes but then it deteriorates

  1219. very attractive price.  Since my Mom needed a printer, I gave her my old HP
  1220. DeskWriter and replaced it with the Color Printer.

  1222.   The Color Printer uses a Canon Color BubbleJet engine, and is overall a
  1223. really nice printer.  I like it a lot.   My one complaint is that the black
  1224. ink is not as dark as the 2d-generation DeskWriter ink I had been using in
  1225. the HP.  The result is that for a page of simple printed text, the contrast
  1226. is not as high, and readability suffers a bit.

  1263. disks, at least for people using non-US System Software.
  1264. The installer states (for my Italian System) error -43 (file/folder not found)

  1266. process fails.
  1267. I have fixed the problem removing the resource "fld#" in the Installer Script
  1268. document coming on the disk. That resource bears the names for the special
  1269. folders inside the System Folder, which are different across the world.

  1515. I'm having trouble running DPI-on-the-fly (Version 2.5) with an NEC 5FGe on
  1516. a Quadra 650 (System 7.1).  I've got the same monitor on a Centris 650
  1517. (System 7.1) and DPI-on-the-fly runs beautiful; I can switch between 3
  1518. resolutions without any problems.  In both cases the adaptor between the
  1519. monitor and the computer is an NEC FG/Mac 640x480.

  1521. When I boot up the Quadra 650, the system tells me that the extensions have
  1522. been turned off and I can't run DPI-on-the-fly, not to mention the other
  1523. extensions.  I imagine there is some difference between the video on the
  1524. Centris 650 and the Quadra 650 and that NEC has to play catch-up with their
  1525. versions of DPI-on-the-fly, but there must also be some kind of problem
  1526. with the wiring of the FG/Mac adaptor as far as the Quadra 650 goes.  What
  1527. is the problem and when or how can it be solved?

  1554. an entire document when I can flip to the end with option-down arrow.

  1575.     Last night I had a relatively routine system crash. I rebooted from
  1576. inside MacsBug and was greeted with the dreaded "Where's your boot floppy?"
  1577. icon.
  1578.     HD Setup (7.0) doesn't recognize the drive as initialized. It can
  1579. test it and says that the disk is either "not initialized or partition map
  1580. invalid".
  1581.     Disk First Aid (7.0) doesn't recognize the drive as there either,
  1582. so it can't do anything.
  1583.     Norton Utilities (2.0) initially doesn't recognize the drive. Then
  1584. I force it to open SCSI 0 and guess the parameters for the HFS and it is
  1585. able to open it, but not mount it. Norton Disk Doctor fixes some trivial
  1586. items, but the file system still remains unmounted.
  1587.     I'm running a Mac SE/30, 4 MB RAM, 80 MB internal hard disk, System
  1588. 7.1. No "exotic" or "excessive" numbers of extensions.
  1589.     This is the first time this sort of thing has happened in years.
  1590.  
  1591.     Can anyone give me any pointers/advice/PD utilities/descriptions of
  1592. payware that can help me out?

  1635. yesterday, the pb started doing somethig weird:
  1636. the extension icons on startup now come on AFTER the startup screen
  1637. but before the desk top.
  1638.  
  1639. this happened immediately after i had restarted the pb and it
  1640. tried to re-initiate a shiva network connexion i'd deliberately cut.
  1641. the shiva restart happened before the icons came on, but on the desktop
  1642. once i cancelled the network restart, the icons danced across
  1643. the desktop! and restart proceeded as per usual.
  1644.  
  1645. now i've got this delayed ext icon start and it ain't pretty: 13 or
  1646. so icons parading across a grey field. yick.
  1647.  
  1648. what i've tried:
  1649. -disk doctor
  1650. -pram zapping
  1651. -desktop rebuilding
  1652. -all extensions etc on
  1653. -all off (with extension manager)
  1654. -holding com/shift key down on restart.
  1655.  
  1656. none of this has changed a thing. this did happen once before - before i
  1657. had extension manager. dropping that ext in solved the problem. (it's
  1658. version 2) but it ain't working this time.

  1685. That thin line is actually a piece of wire, and it's only present on Sony
  1686. Trinitron tubes, which the Apple 14" monitor uses. The wire is a support
  1687. for a very fine metal grid (screen) which aligns the red, green, and blue
  1688. signals from the electron gun in the back of the tube. This grid is called
  1689. the aperture grill and is largely responsible for the excellent image
  1690. produced by Trinitron tubes.
  1691. Incidentally, the larger monitors that use Trinitron tubes, such as the 16"
  1692. and 21" models, have two wires, one near the top and one near the bottom.

  1707.    I heard of this problem from some of our users when they went to 7.1.  It
  1708. would appear that Apple has finally de-implemented a couple of calls that
  1709. they
  1710. said would go away 'someday' way back in the 6.x or earlier days.  The
  1711. error just means that the call failed but it is harmless as far as I can
  1712. tell.
  1713. I patched that stuff out of the source and recompiled it.  I can probably
  1714. mail you a binhexed version if you really need it, tho it might have other
  1715. problems with the higher level macs - there was an interim version of Kermit
  1716. that fixed some odd problem and I'm not sure I have that fix in my version.

  1718.   The alternative is to just ignore it for now and/or wait for the next
  1719. release which is coming (and has been for a couple of years....) RSN.  Or
  1720. maybe one of the binary-patch gurus out there can whip up a patch..???
